Pitches should be a priority - McInnes

Former First Minister Henry McLeish presented his report on the game at Hampden this morning and among a series of recommendations is a call for almost half a billion pounds to be spent on facilities for youth and talent development over the next 10 years.

However, while the St Johnstone boss is keen on those important issues to be addressed, he insists getting pitches in perfect condition would be a good start.

"The playing surfaces in the SPL need to to be better and they need to be monitored," McInnes said. "Someone has to oversee that.

"Each SPL club should put money aside to get their pitches right and there should be an independent body set up to make sure that they do.

"It can't be the case that clubs say that they have spent X amount on their pitches.

"Players should not be allowed to train on them and there should be no reserve games played on them.

"We need training facilities, outdoor and indoor, which serve not only the clubs but are used by the community.

"Clubs need help with that and it needs to be done quickly. And if we are serious about change then it is important to get the right coaches at youth level."

McInnes is preparing his side for the visit of Aberdeen and although the Perth club have worked hard to ensure they are free from the threat of relegation, he is keen to ensure the season just does not just fizzle out

"Clearly last week against St Mirren we didn't play with a real edge until the last 15 minutes when we got two goals to draw 2-2," the former Dundee United and Rangers midfielder said.

"We need to make sure that we work hard and so the approach has to be right.

"If not then we are putting points at risk."

Meanwhile, the Perth boss revealed Steven Anderson and Graham Gartland have both signed two-year deals.

"We are pleased to get them signed up," McInnes said. "We are looking to get one or two other things sorted out over the next few weeks.

"We have an idea of where we are going with regards strengthening the squad in the summer but you are always looking to add to your squad."
