St Johnstone have handed short-term contracts to veteran midfielder Martin Hardie and striker Peter MacDonald to prove their fitness next season.MacDonald, 29, who has undergone two cartilage operations, and Hardie, 34, who required knee reconstruction, have been signed until January.

Manager Derek McInnes said: "Peaso will be ready for pre-season and Martin should be back in September.

"They have both been good servants and shown their value in the SPL."

Hardie, who arrived from Airdrie in 2006, picked up his injury in a closed doors game with Falkirk in November.

MacDonald, who signed from Rangers in 2001 is the Scottish Premier League club's longest-serving player, was injured while scoring away to Kilmarnock in February.

The striker told Saints' website: "I'm delighted to get a contract and I'm determined to repay the gaffer for his faith in me.

"Obviously, when you're injured and going out of contract, it's a worry, but I'll be back for pre-season and it can't come soon enough for me."
